A family run business, SCD has a reputation for quality and fine finishing in modelling, carving and casting in all materials

SCD originated in the 60’s and from its roots (a shed at the bottom of the garden) has developed in size and stature over the years to be regarded as the premiere sculptor’s workshop in England for up and coming film and TV technicians in set construction and figurative carving.  In essence many an aspiring artist, now professional in their own right has passed through SCD’s studio doors. 

SCD has a studio workshop set in quiet and rural surroundings just inside the M25 at junction 22, with close links to the M1, A1 and Thameslink railway.  The facility is approximately 2000sq feet with a floor to ceiling height of 15 feet (5metres).  We also have access to larger facilities within a close proximity of our address should a project require it.

Having worked at numerous TV, commercial and film studios we have a professional attitude to stage awareness and all its safety aspects and have adapted to working in all manner of locations and terrains in the UK and around the world, some less glamorous than others!

Derek Howarth founded SCD whilst working as an assistant to Henry Moore.  Since then he has become an internationally renowned sculptor with his work held in private collections across the U.K., Europe and America.  As an Associate of the Royal British Society of Sculptors he is a visiting tutor to various art colleges and schools.

Gideon Lee Howarth has followed in his father’s footsteps and has been fortunate enough to not only to be trained by Derek, but also many of the various heads of construction departments, establishing his own skills as a top freelance sculptor and bespoke carpenter with over twenty years experience in all manner of projects and locations around the world. SCD is able to call on the assistance of many a dedicated team member.  The size of the job determines the size of the workforce.  Our team are all self employed, free-lance agents and therefore “Cometh the job, cometh the man/woman”.

 Built on solid foundations and with many years of experience behind them, SCD continues to grow and adapt to modern concepts and constraints of design.  Pioneering new techniques in poly sculpting, sculptural construction, model and prop fabrication for use across a multitude of industries.  The majority of our work uses polystyrene to create sculpts, props, architectural and functional pieces, however we also use other materials including clay, plaster, eurathane, fibreglass, acrylic, resins, fillers, wood, stone and semi precious materials.

Having worked closely with various designers, production managers and event co-ordinators, SCD prides itself on providing excellent client liaison and will guide your project from design to completion.  Our creative expertise in material uses, technical skills and quality craftsmanship right through to transportation and installation will ensure we always provide a practical and successful outcome.  Carved in stone or more realistically polystyrene, we endeavour to maintain the highest standards of expertise and professionalism.
